Ceramic giraffe plate by Sally Cornwell, SkySong Pottery 10.5″ x 8″
Working with some of the oldest techniques in pottery- pinch, slab and coil – I create one-of-a-kind pieces, using natural color and texture of the clays then complimenting them with my own glazes and oxides. Inspired by the nature that surrounds us, my work tends to have an organic feel- leaves with bug holes eaten in them: bowls that nestle comfortingly in your hands; gourd shapes with ragged edges and asymmetrical vines. I also experiment with the juxtaposition of man and nature- leaving a band of rough geometric patterns around the edge of a smooth glazed plate; filling a bowl that is unglazed on the outside with a pool of glossy color inside; adding vines, feathers or seedpods to a pot with copper wire and glass beads. – Sally Cornwell
