Blue and yellow ceramic plate by Kristine Soleri 8.5″
Majolica is a type of earthenware that had its origins in 9th century Persia. This technique evolved in an attempt to imitate Chinese porcelain traded in the mid-east. Majolica traveled from Persia to Spain to Italy, and it is thought to have derived its name from the Spanish island, Majorica, through which the trade routes passed. Contemporary Majolica draws from the traditional techniques of white glazed earthenware decorated with pigments and sometimes lusters, informed by each potters’ artistry.
