Timothy Jones believes one’s life is defined by their passions. His are classic cars, alpine climbing and analog black and white photography, but not necessarily in that order. The thread binding these together is simplicity.
Jones chooses black and white as he finds it elegant and simplistic. The 8×10 format allows him to contact print an image the exact size as the piece of film it was recorded on. Jones carries a few lenses, a camera, some film holders, a meter and a sturdy support. The print is made by placing the negative in direct contact with the paper and exposure is by a simple light source.
Printing in a traditional darkroom eliminates life’s daily distractions so Jones can concentrate on subject matter, which is anything that returns light to his film in a way that pleases him. Furthermore, he enjoys the connection to the past the analog historical processes afford him. The final rendering may be a literal representation or a distortion of reality depending how Jones feels about what’s in front of his lens.
What began as a hobby in 1973 with a borrowed 35mm rangefinder camera has evolved into what you see here.
